Goodbye Workforce, Hello Pension: Pensioner Plans and Discounts Explained

Welcome to the wonderful world of being a pensioner! A pensioner is another word for a retiree who now collects from a pension, or a retirement fund. Pensioners are usually over the age of 65 and out of the workforce. You’ve worked hard all your life. Now that you are a pensioner, you are able to enjoy it.

Pensioner Funds

There are two main types of pensioner funds in the United States. These are called defined benefit or defined contribution plans.

A defined benefit plan promises a certain amount of money each month when you retire. The amount of money you receive depends of factors such as work experience, age and salary. You can expect the same amount of money each and every month which can provide stability and security for your future. One of the common features of a defined benefit plan is an early retirement provision which encourages employees to retire early. This is because they would rather hire younger employees at a lower wage.

A defined contribution plan depends on several different factors. In most cases, a defined contribution plan depends of you. You should how much you want to contribute each pay check and inevitable, you choose how much money you will receive in your pension. The contributions are invested in the stock market. IRA and 401 K plans are examples of defined contribution plans.

Of course the downfall to defined contribution plans comes when the stock market crashes, like in recent times. It involved much more risk than a defined benefit plan but it also offers a lot more choice and freedom in your pension plan.

However, there are certain retirement plans that are a hybrid of both of these pensioner plans. For example, a Cash Balance plan takes features from both plans. They include both a notional balance which acts like the defined benefit and an interest credit which acts as the defined contribution. Hybrid pension plans are becoming increasingly popular because they give you financial freedom but also promise a secure amount of money every year you work.

Pensioner Discounts

One of the great things about being a pensioner is the pensioner discounts. Life becomes much simpler and also cheaper. Pensioners receive discounts on anything from clothing to dinners, from movie passes to bus passes. There are several websites that provide a full list of places that offer pensioner discounts anywhere from 5 percent to 75 percent.

You can travel the world for a lot cheaper as airlines, cruises, buses and trains all offer pensioner discounts.  You can also enjoy local events including ball games, aquariums, zoos and other tourist attractions for a lot cheaper. In many cases pensioners are charged as children. Treat your whole family to a day of fun without paying the regular price.

You’ve worked hard all your life. It’s about time someone caught you a break with your money. So sit back, relax and enjoy your pensioner fund. After all, you deserve it.
